Shopping for your own airfare on “non-traditional” routes can save you real money.
When Trisha and I went to the Cayman Islands, we saved something like $400 by flying into West Palm Beach and driving to Miami. $400 for a 20-something minute drive?
But before you boom some crazy itinerary just to save a few bucks, looks at the times. You’re not going to make that 22 minute connection. You’re not. Nope. Never.
So if you’re going to go from St Louis to NYC via Albuquerque to save some money (at the risk of your sanity), go for it. But be sure to give your arriving plane at least 90 minutes before your departing plane leaves. And if you’ve never been to the connecting airport, or it’s big, or it’s Atlanta… better make it 2 hours.
